There's an old goodwife's tale about a scorpion and a frog that encapsulates the true meaning of betrayal. In asking for a ride across a swollen river, a scorpion promised a frog that he wouldn't sting him as long as the frog takes him across the river without dumping him over. The frog protests, saying that the scorpion will sting him no matter what promises are made; after much arguing, the frog eventually gives in and allows the scorpion to hop onto its back. Predictably, halfway across the river, the scorpion stings the frog. As they are going down, the frog asks why the scorpion broke its word. In reply the scorpion says, "Hey, I'm a scorpion, what else did you expect?" This is the truth of betrayal; it hurts all parties involved equally, and without exception.
