Ancient thinking was that air caused sickness; everything from "morning breath" to the Plague of Bulbs has been blamed on foul odors (known as "humors") in the air. All kinds of healers prescribed air cleansing rituals that did nothing but line the pockets of these so-called healers with coins; recent investigations into disease have shown that many of the problems people suffer from deal directly with blood. Anyone with experience in Gates could have told them that centuries ago, since it was well known amongst the Masters of Gates that Blood carries health to monsters of flesh and bone.
