Encompassing all plant life that blooms and burrows, the Skill of Botany is what separates Man from Beast. Cultivating plants, flowers, roots, and other vegetation is something that no other animal does, and while an argument can be made for rabbits having favorite grazing areas or moles having favored roots to eat, none of these animals take the care and effort to plant, cultivate, and harvest that Man does. Many botanists got their start as draught makers or chirurgeons, turning to Botany only in an effort to reduce costs; once they discovered the wonders of seeing something grow and evolve before their very eyes, however, they became entranced with the idea of continued creation. Once one studies Botany long enough, they will understand how life works at a simpler level; perhaps enough study of this life can lead to inspiration in our own, some day...

Agriculture[]

After the Upheaval when Man was separated from Wyrm, Man was forced to fend for himself in all ways. One of the recognized turning points of Man (before the arrival of the New Gods and the knowledge that they brought) was the cultivation of certain plants that could be processed and turned into food. Without Agriculture, Man could not have a specialized economy; if Man were forced to spend all his time hunting and gathering, Man would have no time to learn new Phemes or Spells, let alone create literature, art, or stone palaces. The Skill of Agriculture teaches one how to cultivate plants through magic instead of by hand, a brilliant and wonderful fusion of two traditions that keep men and women thriving to this very day.

Roots[]

The study of Roots is key to any Botanist's understanding of the anatomy and origins of vascular plants. In magically adapted flora, there can be some weird variations, but it's generally true to think of roots as the bits of plants that have no leaves and absorb and keep water and nutrients. They often keep plants fixed in place, but in ambulatory flora they often serve as the "legs." They can be, and often are, weaponized in high-magic environments.

Seeds[]

In a way, the study of Seeds is where Botany starts. Seeds are where fertilized, embryonic plants that are separated from their parent plant, but haven't yet taken root - or, at least, haven't begun extracting nutrition from outside the seedcoat. They represent a fairly short phase in the lives and reproductive cycles of certain flora, but they're a worthy line of study all the same - not least because they often have a kind of magical significance if properly approached.
