Once deemed the art of the wealthy, the Skill of Calligraphy has since made its way down to the common folk. Calligraphy can be found in all areas of daily life for those who do not spend their days entirely outside...and sometimes even for those who do. The Skill behind sweeping writing, grandiose letters, and the occasional misapplied document has become one that many parents wish that their children would learn. Their wishes are translated into cold hard coins, for the art of Calligraphy is one of the few thing that magic cannot be substituted for. Masters of Calligraphy are also masters of inks, parchment, colors, and styles; those who are considered masters of Calligraphy can find themselves in high demand in high courts.

Bookbinding[]

Before the discovery and widespread use of parchment, magicians and laypersons alike were forced to use clay tablets, papyrus, or sand boxes to express their thoughts in writing. With the new technologies, though, knowledge could be transmitted through scrolls and (albeit later) books. While valued for their ancient wisdom, scrolls are mostly frowned upon for tramsitting knowledge overlong periods of time because of their inherent frailty; books, on the other hand, are the preferred medium for libraries and serious thinkers. Those who understand how to properly bind and repair books can usually find employment in a library back rooom or in the home of a private collector, making it a skill both useful and interesting.

Forgery[]

No one hails the forger as an artist desperate to be discovered; just the opposite, in truth, for a forger is to be fearead in many realms. The study of Forgery is not technically illegal...only the use of their art is. One can skirt the law by creating a forgery for "speculative effect" only, yet the number of items and papers that have been created in this manner, only to find themselves in the "real world" is staggeringly high. Those who study Forgery will likely not have any issues making money in their lives, though they may have to constantly move to avoid those they have offended with their "speculative effects".

Illustration[]

Illustration, as a subskill of Calligraphy, began as the illuminator's art: drawing cavorting pigs and rampaging dragons on the margins of expensive manuscripts by shared candles and feeble spell-light. With the rise of cheap, popular newspapers, though, illustration as storytelling has come into its own - particularly in regions where the written language isn't necessarily all that widely understood. This is also a skill very useful to fine artists, honing instincts for composition and dramatic posing that can inform painting and sculpture alike.

Ink Compounds[]

The world's most famous calligraphers often create their own ink and raw ingredients and careful Incantation, looking for specific effects - or just a stability of line - that they can't trust anyone else to deliver. You're not quite at that level yet, but the study of Ink Compounds can tell you a lot about what you can expect when pen touches paper, and about how to get a look you like on the page. In some schools, this would be considered a Brew subskill, but the Academagia... well, it takes its Calligraphy curriculum very seriously.
