Abilities are used be selecting "Use Ability" in the calendar menu.
For Actions, Spells and Items look in the corresponding categories.
Note that there are two types of Abilities. Active abilities can be performed by choosing "Use Ability" when you plan a unit of any given day. And there are Passive Abilities that work permanently.
Abilities can be unlocked by raising skills, by uncovering locations or by wearing/holding certain items.
