Rhetoric isn't about the delivery of beautiful speeches, exactly; that's Oratory. Instead, it's the skill that allows one to write the speeches - to arrange ideas effectively, and to string words together in such a way that arguments persuade and ideals excite. Along with Grammar and Dialectic, Rhetoric is one of the pillars of compelling debate and rational thought in a world that needs both more than ever.

Character is often described in many ways; favored among these descriptions are: Personal Fortitude, Upstanding Personified, and Classy.  Character is something that can be learned and is, indeed, rarely born into a person.  Some say that suffering brings out character.  Others say that academic pride makes it shine.  Only inward speculation, however, can truly bring out the character within the person.

Knowing when and what to fear is the purview of the confident, just as knowing when and how to lead is the purview of leaders.  Confidence is about knowing how far one can push one's self just as much as it is about knowing what one can and can't do.  Confidence in one's self breeds confidence in others, but being the first to plant the seed is the hard part.  Those who work on their confidence will be rewarded with greater friendships and understanding between enemies, for even rivals quiver a bit when facing a person who is confident.

Who said, "Let there be light among us!" and "The taste of victory is sweet, dear friends, and drowns out the mucky water of labor!"?  Those who know their Famous Speeches know just who said these lines and why.  More important than the words are the situations that inspired the words.  Crossing a bridge may be difficult for those whose morale is low, but crossing a bridge under heavy fire and outnumbered fifteen to one is nothing to the soldier who has been properly motivated.  Words have the power to lift the soul and inspire the heart; those who learn the famed speeches of old cannot help but pick up a few of their tricks for their own lives.
